Chapter 9 – Is This A Rescue?

“So you people have anything to do with that Dodge back there in the ditch?” the old man asks and nods at the smashed headlamp and dent on the nose of our motor. He spits again, “you make a mess of those boys?”

Adara gives me a guilty look.

“They flagged us down on the freeway,” I say, “gave us some story about a flat,” I glance at his shotgun again, get ready to pull up a blade. Just in case. But surely not? They’re an old couple. “They robbed us, so we chased them down,” I say.

“I don’t know what this world’s coming to,” the woman shakes her head.

“So what’s the problem with your engine?” the old man asks and looks around the girls.

“Overheated, then cut out,” Mick shrugs and nods at the open hood, “won’t start.”

The old man hands his shotgun to the woman and lowers himself to the ground with a grunt.

He walks to our SUV with a rolling, bow-legged gait and peers down into the engine. “Where you people headed?” he asks and leans right into the engine.

“Port City,” I say, “see if we can find out what’s been going on this last week. Try to get a boat back to the mainland and then home.”

Home. It seems a million miles away.

“All your folks back home?”

I nod.

“Well, you’re not going anywhere until you get the radiator sorted and the water pump replaced. Pistons better get checked out too.”

“How long’s all that going to take?” Mick mutters as if he doesn’t even want a response.

“No call-out services round here anymore,” the old man straightens up from the engine and wipes big, gnarled hands down the front of saggy, cord pants.

“Do you know where the nearest garage is?” I ask.

“A couple of kilometers back that away,” the old man says and spits on the ground right near my feet again. “But there’s no-one there to work it anymore.”

“Couldn’t you do it for them, Carl?” the woman says, nursing his shotgun on the tractor.

“Don’t know,” the old man shrugs then seems to hesitate, “have to find the parts. Won’t be no-one local so we’ll have to drive over to pick them up. Hours more to fit. Doubt it would be done before tomorrow.”

Tomorrow?

“I could help you fit the parts,” Adara says to the old man, “we all could.”

“Sure you could sweetheart,” he smiles at her.

I gaze around us. Nothing but largely, leafless trees and yellowing fields of knee-high grass spread out on either side. Mountains beyond. Can’t even see any sign of the freeway from here. I must have driven further chasing those jerks than I thought.

The freeway can’t be more than a couple of miles away though. But that’s almost irrelevant. We’re going to be stranded if we don’t get the transport repaired.

“You think you could help us out?” Dahleen asks and looks first at the old woman and then the man, “we’d be real grateful.”

“Might as well do a good turn Carl,” the old woman says then looks from Dahleen to Bianca and smiles.
